Transportation is a major contributor to climate change, emitting a quarter of the CO2 in the European Union. Of the emissions from transportation, heavy-duty vehicles make up to 27% of the emissions (4% of EU Emissions). Hydrogen is expected to play an important role in long-haul transport. Of various kinds of electrolyzers technologies available, Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell (SOEC) is attractive because of unparalleled conversion efficiencies.
The goal of the project is to make an important contribution to advance SOEC technology to achieve a green decentralized, effective hydrogen production for hydrogen fueling stations, especially with regards to needs of heavy vehicles. The main challenge for SOEC technology is materials degradation at high temperatures. The goal with project is to increase the life time of the stacks and lower the cost.
This will be achieved through the development of a cost-effective metallic interconnect that withstands the demanding SOEC environment.
