The purpose of this project is to address the cost and safety issues on large-scale energy storage. As a promising candidate, Zn batteries have unique merits including high safety, environmentally friendly, resource abundance, and convenient preparation, arising significant attention in recent years. However, its notorious dendrite formation induces low utilization of Zn electrodes and short lifespans.
The research approach relies on the establishment of a comprehensive electrolyte screening platform based on a novel combination of operando electrochemical techniques and automated electrolyte formulation system to develop a dendrite-free aqueous Zn battery system. The final aim is to provide a firm principle support for designing dendrite-free Zn metal batteries that satisfy the long-term cycling, high safety and sustainability benchmarks required for clean and renewable energy sources.
