The demand for electric vehicles and energy storage systems has led to rapid growth in the market for lithium-ion batteries and companies like Scania, Volvo and Northvolt are investing heavily in the development of electric transportation and battery systems. One of the biggest challenges in meeting market expectations is to increase the lifespan of battery systems.
This project aims to improve the lifespan of battery systems by developing reliable numerical models on scales from electrode layers to battery modules. Coupled thermomechanical, electrochemical models and their relationship with the health state (SoH) will be considered. The model will assist in the optimization of design parameters with regard to lifespan and state of health.
Experimental verification of the models will be carried out both on a laboratory scale and for whole battery systems.
Results will be disseminated to industry and academia through reference group meetings, workshops, publications, and conferences.
