This is a project about the metals used in batteries. We will recover cobalt, lanthanides, lithium, manganese, nickel and zinc from a mixture of different types of batteries. The process will be able to cope with other elements such as Al, Cd, Cu, Fe and Pb.
When batteries are recycled we should aim to obtain the greatest recovery of value from them, where the environmental and financial cost of the recycling is as small as possible. In this project we want to improve the recycling by creating a process which can be operated on a small / medium scale at many sites using a low energy process which uses sustainable chemicals.
This process will use biomass and waste derived chemicals to convert the complex mixture of substances in waste batteries and nickel laterite ores into pure substances which can be used in new batteries and other high value products. Three companies (DesCycle, Ragn-Sells and MEAB) will cooperate with Chalmers and Göteborg Universities in the project.
