Grant Description

The Swedish steel industry aims to bring fossil-free steel to the global market.

This ongoing transformation to sustainable steel is adopting circular economy pathways through reuse and recycling of available by-products.

Besides, lignin as abundant by-product from pulp/paper industry has underexplored potential as a carbon-carrier for various applications in the steel industry.

The present study aims to develop schemes for maximizing the recirculation of steel residues using lignin as binder and probing its capacity as reducing agent for iron oxides.

This feasibility study targets a comprehensive survey, combined with design and fabrication of lignin-loaded agglomerates for next generation steel making. Different agglomerates composition reveals lignin capability as a binder and aptitude as a carbon source.

This work explores briquetting technique and results are considered in terms of combination of steel industry and pulp/paper industry residual streams.
