The purpose of the project is to develop a technology and methodology that can perform monitoring and diagnostics of equipment in the power grid by utilizing different types of transient stresses as a stimuli or input. Transients in this context can be seen as any type of abnormal stress that does not persist for long times.
The stress can be electromagnetic, thermal or mechanical and can vary in time-scale from microseconds if it is a lightning transient to hours longer if it is an excessive thermal overload.
As a first step the research intends to focus on power transformers, shunt reactors and their bushings as they are among the most important,, expensive and critical components in the power grid.
The research will focus on development of technology and methods that can be connected to the equipment while in operation and can remain connected for long time as it will not be connected live conductors. The expected results should indicate if there is enhanced risk of failure.
