Grant Description

To promote increased use of sustainable fuels, the EU has introduced the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).

RED includes a standardized methodology to classify and calculate greenhouse gas emissions from fuels, ensuring their sustainability.

However, there are uncertainties regarding its application for certain cases, such as mixed feedstocks or integrated facilities. A key aspect of RED is enabling comparisons between different process set-ups, without room for interpretation.

This project maps RED to identify value chains where different interpretations are possible and the resulting consequences for the assessment of the value chains.

The study supplements previous research by comparing RED methodology with other methods, focusing on value chains that have not been studied. One aim is to highlight what incentives different methods create for resource efficiency. The aim is to make it easier for Swedish actors to assess their value chains according to RED.
