Meeting the climate target for Sweden to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 requires an urgent transition from fossil- to biobased economy wherein renewable biomass residues and waste streams become the industrial feedstock.
The chemical industry is primarily fossil based, being the largest industrial energy consumer, and contributing ?16% of the total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The goal of the STAR project is to move forward the technology front for development of scalable resource-, cost-, energy- and GHG efficient production of biobased chemicals and materials with focus on furan compounds from lignocellulosic residues.
STAR involves stakeholders along the value chain and multidisciplinary group of researchers to perform technology optimization and process design for scale up of HMF production from C6 sugars, transformation of HMF and C5 sugar based furfural to FDCA for use in recyclable plastics, techno-economic and life cycle assessments and product evaluations.
