The purpose of this project is to develop hard and durable coatings that resist fuel-related faults during operation, thereby improving the operational efficiency of nuclear power plants.
A major challenge is to find coatings that can both counteract wear caused by debris in the water, and survive under harsh neutron irradiation and oxidation conditions.
The overarching vision is to enhance the functionality and safety of fuel rods for today's and tomorrow's nuclear power.
By preventing corrosion and improving resistance to wear, the project aims to enhance safety at all stages, during normal operation, transients, and potential accidents, as well as during transportation, interim and final storage.
