The project FlyH2UME develops knowledge and prepares for a scalable facility at Umeå airport for flights powered by hydrogen and later liquid hydrogen.
The project contributes to accelerating the transition to a fossil-free flight where the development of aircraft, the airport’s supply and the power grid’s capacity go hand in hand. The purpose is to prepare the establishment of hydrogen at airports and enable hydrogen flight 2035.
The project digs deeper into the conditions in Umeå and will propose concrete measures to meet the future needs of hydrogen, based on the regional market for hydrogen.
An important part concerns safety requirements to be followed when handling hydrogen, highlighting risks and possible shortcomings in laws and regulations that emerge during the project. The design of the hydrogen plant and its scaling is expected to serve as a model for establishment of hydrogen flight.
The project is thus relevant for other airports and cities in Sweden and internationally.
