Grant Description

Lignol® is a lignin based bio-oil designed to be compatible with existing refinery infrastructure.

Being a lignin based product allows for production of SAF with an inherent aromatic content. Aromatic content of jet fuel is required to meet the specifications and thus, by using Lignol® the production of aviation fuels with a 100% renewable content is possible.

This project aims to increase the sustainable aviation fuel yield when hydroprocessing Lignol® in continuous systems. This will be addressed through three strategies: impact of lignin fractionation, Lignol® recipe optimization, and hydroprocessing. The produced SAF will be verified as a suitable fuel for aviation turbines and certification.

The entire process will be summarized in a techno economic report, comparing the outcomes of the different strategies as well as the methodology as a whole. Within this work the whole value chain from black liquor to SAF fuel blends is targeted.
