The CO2 emissions from the shipping industry will increase from 3% of global emissions in 2023 to 17% in 2050 if the industry is left unregulated. To meet current targets of 70% cut in emissions by 2050 compared to 2008 levels, energy efficiency measures must contribute to approx. 32%. Standard propeller technology only reaches 70% efficiency and thus has potential for improvement.
Dolprop Industries aims to seize this opportunity and develop a new propulsion system for the shipping industry. The concept is based on a fin technology, the mode of locomotion of dolphins and whales. The concept is validated for smaller boats and has proved efficiency of 90%.
With this project, Dolprop will mature the Dolprop propulsion system ship version through CFD analysis in collaboration with FS Dynamics. Also, Dolprop aims to identify a customer for collaboration in a pilot project after this concept study.
