The project goal is to describe the technical possibilities to replace fossil-fuel heating systems in the steel industry with electrical heating.
Ingot heating is one of the most challenging processes in steel manufacturing because of the large energy requirements, which leads to significant environmental gains if systems can be converted to renewable energy.
Heating equipment is expensive with a long investment cycle, this makes it important to choose the right technology and type of energy source. The possibilities for electrical ingot heating in the steel industry need to be thoroughly clarified.
For such high temperature applications there is a current lack of knowledge regarding limitations, conditions and opportunities for electrical heating systems.
Furnaces commissioned today may well be in operation in 2045 when Sweden according to the government's goal, shall be a country with net zero CO2 emissions. The project will form part of the decision-making process for steel industry
